Luton Town manager Kevin Blackwell has swooped to sign another goalkeeper on loan, snapping up Tottenham Hotspur’s England Under-21 stopper Ben Alnwick on a three-month loan deal.

Ben, 20, joined Spurs from Sunderland in January for a fee of £900,000 that could rise to £1.3 million depending upon appearances. He is currently Tottenham’s third choice goalkeeper behind Paul Robinson and Radek Černý. He comes to Kenilworth Road following goalkeeper David Forde’s return to Cardiff City after his one-month loan spell with the Hatters.

The news comes as somewhat of a surprise after the excellent performance of Dean Brill during the midweek Carling Cup win over Charlton Athletic, during which Brill performed heroics to keep the Addicks at bay.

Ben made a name for himself at the climax of Sunderland's 2004-05 Championship-winning season, replacing the injured Thomas Myhre for Sunderland's last three games. His performances against Leicester City and West Ham United, the games that won Sunderland promotion to the Premiership impressed the fans greatly.

In November 2005, he enjoyed a stint as the number one goalkeeper at Sunderland, replacing former Hatter Kelvin Davis. Despite impressing, particularly in Sunderland's 2-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur - where he made a superb penalty save from Robbie Keane - Ben was dropped in favour of Kelvin Davis, though his performances won him plenty of accolades on Wearside. After the departure of Davis to Southampton, Ben was given the no.1 shirt for the 2006-07 season.

However, after a disappointing start to the 2006-07 season, Ben was relegated to the substitutes bench in favour of Darren Ward by new Black Cats boss Roy Keane.

Just two days after the January transfer window had opened, Ben joined Tottenham Hotspur for £900,000 in a deal that could rise to £1.3m and saw Márton Fülöp going the other way for £500,000. In total, he made 19 appearances at senior level for Sunderland.

Ben has also represented England at Under-21 level. He received his first call-up to the England under-21 squad ahead of the August 15, 2006 match against Moldova.

Ben was named in Stuart Pearce's first squad as England U-21 coach, alongside another goalkeeper uncapped at U-21 level, Joe Hart. He was not chosen to start the match, on 6 February 2007, against Spain.

Ben was named in the first England U-21 squad to play at the New Wembley against Italy U-21s on 24th March 2007, but he remained and unused sub.

Ben was also named in Stuart Pearce's squad for the U-21 European Championships in Holland.

Ben made his Luton Town debut in a 0-2 loss at Huddersfield Town and he went on to make 4 appearances in total for the Hatters, during which he failed to appear in a winning Luton Town side!

His final appearance of his loan spell came in a 0-2 defeat at Crewe Alexandra before he was recalled by his parent club Tottenham Hotspur following an injury to their first-choice goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
