LATE CRADDOCK STRIKE EARNS HATTERS POINT...

Loan striker Tom Craddock snatched a point for Luton Town at Blundell Park and denied former boss Mike Newell a win against his former club.

Luton had looked dead and buried when the Middlesbrough forward, who had already once levelled the scores with a first-half penalty, found the net deep into stoppage-time.

And Grimsby were left with a feeling of disbelief after goals from Peter Bore and Ryan Bennett had looked to have secured Newell his first win since taking over.

History was also made during the game as 16-year-old striker Jordan Patrick became the youngest-ever player to pull on a Luton Town shirt when he came on as a second-half substitute.

The Hatters made two changes to the side that started the weekend's dismal 1-2 home defeat to Accrington Stanley, with Claude Gnakpa and Sol Davis replacing Harry Worley and Garreth O'Connor.

There was also a boost for manager Mick Harford in the shape of striker Sam Parkin, who was named among the substitutes after a spell on the sidelines with a back problem.

The Hatters made the most dreadful of starts and were behind after just 41 seconds following a comedy of errors at the back.

First, Gnakpa failed to properly clear his lines when under pressure from Liam Trotter on the edge of the penalty area and, after Peter Bore managed to squeeze the ball under the body of goalkeeper Conrad Logan, skipper Keith Keane got his feet tangled up on the goal line, allowing the striker an easy tap-in.

Grimsby were looking the more dangerous of the two sides and broke forward again on 15 minutes, with Peter Till's run and cross from the left allowing Bore to fire just wide.

The Mariners then came agonisingly close to doubling their advantage on 21 minutes when Bore's right-footed curler from 25-yards looked destined for the top right-hand corner. However, a full-stretch Logan brilliantly tipped his effort over the crossbar.

Moments later, Luton got back on level terms, albeit against the run of play.

Craddock burst into the box on 24 minutes but was brought down by home stopper Phil Barnes, who was only booked for the offence.

"Craddock brushed himself down and rifled the resulting spot-kick low into the net"

The young striker brushed himself down and rifled the resulting spot-kick low into the net, despite Barnes' best efforts to save it.

On 53 minutes, Davis needed to put in a last-ditch tackle to deny James Hunt while at the other end, keeper Barnes almost gifted the visitors a second when the ball slipped from his grasp when attempting to catch a high ball under pressure from Chris Martin on the goal line but, luckily for him, he just about managed to hold on.

But disaster soon struck again for Luton on 58 minutes when, after Michael Spillane had pulled down Bore on the edge of the box, Till floated the resulting free-kick on to the head of unmarked centre-half Bennett, who rose highest inside a packed penalty area to head into the net and restore Grimsby's advantage.

It almost got even worse four minutes later when Nick Hegarty spotted Logan off his line and tried his luck with an ambitious effort from over on the right-hand touchline, but Logan diverted it over the crossbar with a diving stop.

Grimsby almost scored a third two minutes from time when Bore's stinging shot from the left-hand edge of the box flew across Logan, but finished up just inches wide of the far post.

"But it was the visitors, and Craddock, who were to have the final say as he struck in the fourth minute of added time"

But it was the visitors, and Craddock, who were to have the final say as he struck in the fourth minute of added time after a lovely through ball from youngster Patrick to grab an unlikely point for Harford's men.

Harford's Comments 21 October 2008

Grimsby Town 2-2 Luton Town

Mick Harford

"It was a sublime pass to slip Tom Craddock in and Jordan Patrick didn't look like a 16-year-old.

"The weight of the pass was perfect and it proved it was worth putting him on.

"I would imagine he'll feature again at Bury. He came on and made an impact. He's great to have around and is a bubbly kid. He deserves another opportunity.

"Tom Craddock makes great runs, he was on the other side of the centre-half and the linesman said to me that Tom was pulling him but that's impossible to do when he's ahead of the defender. We felt we should have had another penalty.

"For some reason in the second-half we stopped passing the ball. Grimsby got in our faces and they were the better team.

"We let in another sloppy goal from a set-piece which killed us. But all credit to the lads they got a very late goal and a deserved point if not more.

"This will give the lads a boost but in all fairness we should be coming to places like this and winning with all the possession we had."
