EX-HATTER THORPE SCORES BUT LUTON WIN...

Luton Town old boy Tony Thorpe scored against his former club on his first game for Stevenage Borough since signing a two-year deal at Broadhall Way.

But the Hatters did enough to make it three wins from three pre-season games against their Conference neighbours.

Ahmet Brkovic – who has a fine scoring record against Stevenage – put Luton into an early lead when he nodded home Steve Robinson's fourth minute cross from the left.

"And Robinson himself made it 2-0 a minute before the interval"

And Robinson himself made it 2-0 a minute before the interval when he rifled home an unstoppable 22-yard rocket from Steve Howard's lay off.

The lead was maybe slightly flattering for Luton after Stevenage had created openings with ex-Cambridge City winger Dale Binns in particular giving Kevin Foley a torrid time on the left flank.

"New Borough signing Thorpe entered proceedings as a 58th minute substitute"

New Borough signing Thorpe entered proceedings as a 58th minute substitute and was roundly booed and jeered by the visiting Luton fans.

But he got his own back 12 minutes later by expertly nodding past Marlon Beresford from 12-yards after Jon Nurse's deep cross from the right.

1-0: Steve Robinson celebrates his goal

1-0: Robinson celebrates his goal.

It was the first goal Luton had conceded so far in their warm-up matches following a 6-0 win at St Albans and a 4-0 win at Hitchin earlier in the week.

Peter Holmes saw a glancing header skim the top of the crossbar 12 minutes from time after Stephen O'Leary's cross as the game ended 2-1 to Hatters.

The only player from both sides to complete the full 90 minutes was Luton trialist Lewis Emanuel, who put in an impressive showing at left-back.

Another point of note from the game was the identity of the match official.

Darren Deadman was the referee who sparked controversy by refusing to take charge of Wednesday night's clash with St Albans.

He had then stated his refusal to oversee the game as being down to the fact that both sides wanted to make more than six substitutions – a fact he said contravened official regulations.

But he did not seem affected by the usual high turnaround in players this time around.

Luton continue their pre-season games by hosting Fulham at Kenilworth Road on Friday next week, but are looking to arrange another friendly before that encounter.

If the other game is confirmed in time it could give injured trio Chris Coyne (knee), Sol Davis (thigh) and Leon Barnett (hamstring) a chance to return.
