BRKOVIC GOAL EARNS LUTON PRE-SEASON VICTORY... Ahmet Brkovic scored late on to seal a narrow pre-season victory for Luton Town over near-neighboroughs Stevenage Borough on Saturday afternoon. In what was often a scrappy and at times bad tempered affair, Luton recorded their second pre-season victory on the spin despite Stevenage creating the better opportunities in the game.
The Hatters took the lead midway through the first-half thanks to a perfectly taken Paul Underwood free-kick from 25-yards but saw that lead cancelled out through Stevenage striker Anthony Elding. Brkovic then grabbed the all important goal late on when his turn and shot, from a Kevin Nicholls pass, beat Stevenage goalkeeper Alan Julian. Despite fielding a strong line-up, Luton were on the back foot for the majority of the first-half and the Hatters could have been a goal down as early as the third minute had Dannie Bulman controlled a first-time volley on target.
Luton failed to really get going with Enoch Showunmi and Steve Howard failing to carve open an opportunity and the Stevenage defence looking tight. Stevenage's George Boyd created two openings in the space of five first-half minutes when the midfielder firstly cracked a fierce effort from 25-yards straight into the arms of Hatters goalkeeper Dean Brill and then, moment's later, tried his luck from out on the left flank when Brill's poorly timed clearance left Boyd with an empty net to aim at. Luton had centre-back Chris Coyne to thank on 26 minutes for a headed goal line clearance when Dino Maamria's shot beat Brill as the Hatters continued to struggle for possession and clear cut chances. "Underwood gave the Hatters the lead" In fact, Luton's first real opening came when Underwood gave the Hatters the lead as his curling free-kick beat Julian from 25-yards with Showunmi doing his best to get the final touch and add his name to the score sheet. Luton could have doubled their advantage a minute before the interval when Howard, cutting inside from the left flank, drilled a low shot which Julian pushed around a post. Chances were few and far between in what was a scrappy second-half display. Brkovic went close on 47 minutes when Underwood's surging run and cross from the left found the Croatian but he failed to take advantage of a good opening. Brkovic squandered another effort moments later as, on 50 minutes, the midfielder struck a shot straight into the arms of Julian when the midfielder had time and space in the Stevenage penalty area to pick a spot.
Luton's wasted chances early in the second-half were to cost the Hatters as Stevenage grabbed a deserved equaliser on 51 minutes when Dannie Williams' perfectly weighted cross from the right flank found Elding who had no trouble but to tap the ball past Brill. Dean Morgan, Markus Heikkinen and Peter Holmes were all introduced in the second-half along with trialist Paul Dalglish. "Luton grabbed the winner in the 77th minute" Luton grabbed the winner in the 77th minute as Brkovic swivelled inside the Stevenage penalty area to drill a low shot under the body of Julian and into the back of the net.
