LATE SWANS GOALS SEND LUTON OUT OF LDV...

Two last minute goals from Swansea City saw battling ten man Luton Town crash out of the LDV Vans trophy in south Wales.

A largely reserve Hatters side had Leon Barnett sent-off in the 12th minute, but hung on until Kevin Nugent and Sam Ricketts goals won the tie for the League Two outfit.

Luton began with a completely different starting 11 to the side that beat Peterborough United on Saturday.

Only Keith Keane and Steven O'Leary had previously made a first-team League start for the Hatters this season from the squad selected.

Swansea made just two changes from their weekend win over Rushden & Diamonds and included ex-Hatter Adrian Forbes and new Watford loan signing Scott Fitzgerald in their line-up.

Mike Newell's team selection showed his attitude towards the LDV competition, but Swansea stated their intentions from the off with an explosive start.

Just 10 seconds were on the clock when Fitzgerald's 20-yard shot had to be tipped over by Dino Seremet.

Still in the first minute, Kristian O'Leary fired in a low drive from the edge of the area that Seremet had to push away to his left.

"Things got worse for Hatters in the 12th minute when teenager Barnett was sent-off"

Things got worse for Hatters in the 12th minute when teenager Barnett was sent-off for upending a suspiciously offside looking Forbes after the former Luton man ran on to Andy Gurney's through ball.

And Dino Seremet then escaped with a caution two minutes later after shoving Kevin Austin following a foul by the Swansea man.

Skipper for the night David Bayliss then made way for substitute Russell Perrett in the 24th minute as Luton reorganised.

But Perrett was turned by his former teammate Forbes three minutes later as the Swans striker smashed an effort just past the post from 14-yards.

The Hatters finally worked their way into the game and Enoch Showunmi just failed to get on the end of Steven O'Leary's cross in the 36th minute after a flowing move.

A minute later Calvin Andrew brought down Keith Keane's long pass inside the area and shot just wide.

Andrew almost undid his good work by slicing Andy Robinson's mis-hit corner past Seremet - only for Alan Neilson to hack clear four minutes before half-time.

The hosts threatened again five minutes after the break when Seremet saved at Fitzgerald's feet and Forbes put the rebound just over the bar.

Lee Mansell, playing as a makeshift left-back, then had to head Gurney's header off the line in the 54th minute after another Robinson corner.

Robinson then let fly from 35-yards three minutes later and saw Seremet nervously bundle the ball past the upright as the hosts made their extra man count.

After entering the referee's notebook earlier in the second-half, Alan Neilson took out Forbes on the edge of the area with 16 minutes to go and Gurney's resulting deflected free-kick was gathered by Seremet as Luton hung on.

"The breakthrough came in the last minute"

The breakthrough came in the last minute when substitute Nugent swept home Robinson's left-wing cross from close range.

Seconds later Ricketts ran into the area and curled home from 15-yards for number two.

Newell's Comments 28 September 2004

Swansea City 2-0 Luton Town

Mike Newell

"It was always going to be difficult with ten men for that period of time," admitted Newell. "We had a lot of lads out there who have not played a great deal of football recently and it was a test that I thought they came through.

"It is a frustrating game these days, I am not convinced by the red card. It ruins the game, he has made an honest challenge for the ball and Bayliss was providing cover but it is one of those things, sometimes it is a red card, other times it isn't.

"David Bayliss has sustained a hamstring injury. It is very frustrating for him at the moment because he can't get through three or four games without picking something up.

"I can't fault any of the players for their effort. No one likes getting beaten, in any competition, but they gave it everything they had and they were in the match until the last minute."
